Communal bathrooms are used in many living situations where space is limited and multiple people need to share a restroom. Walking around on a cold tile floor shared
by others with your bare feet can be a bit repulsive. This is what shower shoes are for, they are shoes you can wear while you shower and keep your feet from coming in contact with the often unsanitary, cold floor.
Places like gyms are prone to have foot fungus on the shower room floor because the people exercising are wearing socks and gather a lot of sweat. Naturally after their workout they head to the shower to wash off, and walk barefoot on the ground. This can cause the floor to be covered in all sorts of harmful fungi and bacteria. The bacteria along with the water normally make for a very sloppy and slimy floor. This is why non slip shower shoes were created: to allow you to navigate the shower without having to worry about slipping on the slick floor while also not having to worry about acquiring any sort of strange infection from the community that shares the shower.
Slipping in the shower can be dangerous, not only because the ground is normally hard in a shower, but because the floor is rarely sanitary. Landing on a gym or dorm shower floor could be a pretty gross experience, not to mention if you get hurt you are stranded without clothing in a public place. Also falling on solid floor is excruciatingly painful, and will likely lead to injury.
Non slip shower shoes tend to look like rubber flip flops a person would wear to the beach. They are waterproof, dry easily, and generally made of rubber and plastic. The non slip variety of shoes usually have some sort of treading on the bottom side to gain extra traction on the smooth floor. Not all non slip shoes for the shower are in the form of flip flops either, many take the form of sandals.
Most companies that make shoes also make a variety of shower shoes. The shoes come in different types as well, such as unisex, and gender specific. You also don’t have to wear your shoes solely for showering, you can wear them to the beach, pool, or any other place where you would normally wear flip flops. Just because they are non slip shower shoes doesn’t mean you have to only wear them in the shower.
